పలమనేరులో నివసించే సుబ్బరాజుకు ఒక దురలవాటు ఉండేది- స్నేహితుల దగ్గర అప్పుగా తీసుకొన్న డబ్బును తిరిగి ఇచ్చేవాడు కాదు అతను.
చాలానాళ్లక్రితం అతనికి డబ్బు అప్పు ఇచ్చిన మిత్రుడొకడు ఎదురయ్యాడోసారి: "ఏరా, సుబ్బరాజూ! నా డబ్బు నాకు ఎప్పుడిస్తావు?" అని అడిగాడు.
అంతలో వీళ్ల దగ్గరికి ఒక బిచ్చగాడు వచ్చాడు- "ధర్మం చేయండి బాబూ, ధర్మం చేయండి!" అని అడుక్కుంటూ.

మిత్రుడిముందు తన గొప్పతనం చూపించుకోవాలనిపించింది సుబ్బరాజుకు. జేబులోంచి కొంచెం చిల్లర తీసి, బిచ్చగాడికి ఒక రూపాయి ఇచ్చాడు.
ఆపైన మిత్రుడితో "చూశావా? ఇక్కడ మనం ఇద్దరమూ ఉన్నాం కదా? అయినా వాడు నన్నే బిచ్చం అడిగాడు- ఎందుకో తెలుసా? కొందరి మొహం చూస్తే అడగ బుద్ధి వేస్తుంది.
ఎవరిలో ధర్మం ఉందో బాగా కనుక్కుంటారు భిక్షగాళ్ళు!" అన్నాడు గర్వంగా.
తీసుకున్న అప్పు తీర్చకుండా అతిగా మాట్లాడుతున్న సుబ్బరాజుని చూసి స్నేహితుడికి ఒళ్ళు మండింది- "వాడు నిన్ను బిచ్చం ఎందుకు అడిగాడో బాగానే చెప్పావు- కానీ వాడు నన్నెందుకు బిచ్చం అడగలేదో చెప్పనా, నేను?" సుబ్బరాజుని అడిగాడు.
చెప్పమన్నాడు సుబ్బరాజు, విషయం తన అప్పు మీదినుండి ఇంత సులభంగా బిచ్చగాడి మీదికి జారిపోయినందుకు సంతోషిస్తూ.
మిత్రుడు చెప్పాడు- "నా దగ్గర అప్పటికే ఓ బిచ్చగాడు ఉన్నాడు కదా, ఇక 'పోటీ ఎందుకు?' అనిపించింది వాడికి! అందుకని, వాడు ఇక నన్ను భిక్షం అడగలేదు" అని.
చురక తగిలింది సుబ్బరాజుకు.
త్వరలోనే మిత్రుడి డబ్బును తిరిగి ఇచ్చేసి, ఋణ విముక్తుడయ్యాడు.
