ప్రియమైన మిత్రులారా, మేము గత రెండు నెలలుగా అమెరికాలోని వాషింగ్టన్ రాష్ట్రంలో ఉన్న సియాటెల్ నగరంలో ఉంటున్నాము. భారతదేశం నుండి వచ్చేటప్పుడే నా భార్యకు శ్వాసకోస సంబంధిత సమస్య తీవ్రంగా ఉంది. ఆమె పరిస్థితిని దృష్టిలో ఉంచుకుని, మేము భారత్ నుండి తగినన్ని మందులను వెంట తెచ్చుకున్నాము. అమెరికాలో ఆ మందులు వాడిన తర్వాత ఆమె దాదాపు కోలుకుంది. అయితే, తెచ్చుకున్న మందులు అయిపోవడంతో మా పర్యటన సమయంలో ఆమెకు మళ్లీ శ్వాసకోస సమస్య వస్తుందేమోనని నేను ఆందోళన చెందాను. అందుకే, సియాటెల్లోని ఒక పల్మనాలజిస్ట్ (శ్వాసకోస నిపుణుడు) అపాయింట్మెంట్ తీసుకోమని నా కుమార్తెను కోరాను.. కానీ, నేరుగా నిపుణుడిని కలవడానికి వీల్లేదని, ముందుగా జనరల్ ఫిజీషియన్ను కలవాలని నా కుమార్తెకు చెప్పారు. దాని కోసం మాకు వారం రోజుల తర్వాత అపాయింట్మెంట్ ఇచ్చారు, అది కూడా కేవలం వీడియో కాల్ ద్వారా మాత్రమే. మేము ఫోన్లో సుమారు 10 నిమిషాల పాటు డాక్టరుతో మాట్లాడి, ఇండియాలో నా భార్య వాడుతున్న మందుల గురించి వివరించాము. ఆయన సమస్యను అర్థం చేసుకున్నానని చెబుతూ, అందుకు తగ్గట్టుగా మందులు రాసిచ్చారు. ఆ మందులను మెడికల్ స్టోర్ నుండి తీసుకోవచ్చని చెప్పారు. తీరా మేము స్టోర్లో విచారించగా, ఆ మందులు వెంటనే అందుబాటులో లేవని, రావడానికి 4-5 రోజులు పడుతుందని చెప్పారు.. చివరికి ఐదో రోజున మాకు ఆ మందులు అందాయి. ఆశ్చర్యకరమైన విషయం ఏమిటంటే, ఆ మందులను 'సిప్లా' (Cipla) కంపెనీ తయారు చేసింది మరియు వాటిపై 'మేడ్ ఇన్ ఇండియా' అని రాసి ఉంది. అమెరికాలో తీసుకున్న మెడికల్ ఇన్సూరెన్స్ వల్ల 50% రాయితీ లభించిన తర్వాత కూడా మేము ₹21,000 చెల్లించాల్సి వచ్చింది. అంటే ఇండియాలో కేవలం ₹2,500 ఖరీదు చేసే మందులు, అమెరికాలో అక్షరాలా ₹42,000 అన్నమాట.. భారతదేశంలో మందుల దుకాణాల్లో నేరుగా దొరికే మందులను ఇక్కడ పొందడానికి మాకు 12 రోజుల సమయం పట్టింది. వారం రోజుల తర్వాత, డాక్టర్ సంప్రదింపుల ఫీజు (కన్సల్టేషన్) కోసం మాకు $283 (సుమారు ₹23,000) బిల్లు వచ్చింది. భారతదేశంలో వైద్య సదుపాయాలు చాలా అధ్వాన్నంగా ఉన్నాయని భావించే నా భారతీయ మిత్రుల కోసం నా ఈ అనుభవాన్ని పంచుకుంటున్నాను.. మీ విశ్రాంత జీవితంలో మీరు భారతదేశంలో నివసిస్తున్నందుకు మిమ్మల్ని మీరు అదృష్టవంతులుగా భావించండి.. పుణ్యభూమి ఐన మన భారతదేశంలో మనం ప్రశాంతంగా బ్రతుకుతున్నందుకు సంతోషించండి..

Advice from a Senior Citizen Currently Visiting the
United States
Dear friends,
For the past two months, we have been staying in Seattle, in
the state of Washington, USA. Even before we left India, my wife was suffering
from a serious respiratory problem. Keeping her condition in mind, we carried
sufficient medication with us from India. After continuing the same medicines
here in America, she almost recovered.
However… once the medicines we brought from India started
running out, I began to worry. What if her breathing problem returned during
our stay? To avoid any risk, I asked my daughter to arrange an appointment with
a pulmonologist (lung specialist) in Seattle.
But we were told that we couldn’t meet a specialist
directly. First, we had to consult a general physician. We were given an
appointment one week later — and that too only through a video call.
We spoke to the doctor over the phone for about ten minutes
and explained the medicines my wife had been taking in India. He said he
understood the issue and prescribed similar medication. He asked us to collect
it from a medical store.
When we went to the pharmacy, we were told the medicines
were not immediately available and would take four to five days to arrive.
Finally, on the fifth day, we received the medicines. What
surprised us was this: the medicines were manufactured by Cipla and
clearly labeled “Made in India.” Even after getting a 50% discount through the
medical insurance we had taken in the U.S., we still had to pay ₹21,000. That
means the actual cost was around ₹42,000 — for medicines that cost only about
₹2,500 in India.
Medicines that are easily available over the counter in
India took us nearly 12 days to obtain here. A week later, we also received a
bill of $283 (around ₹23,000) just for the doctor’s consultation.
I am sharing this experience especially for my Indian
friends who feel that medical facilities in India are very poor.
In your retirement life, consider yourselves fortunate to be
living in India.
Be grateful that we are able to live peacefully in our
sacred motherland, India.
