అనగనగా పెద్ద కొండ ఒకటి ఉండేది. ఆ కొండ మీద అనేక రకాల వృక్షజాతులు జీవనం సాగిస్తూ ఉండేవి. ఆ కొండ మొదట్లో చాలా పురాతనమైన చెట్టు ఒకటి ఉండేది. అన్ని చెట్లకంటే అది బలంగాను, చాలా ఎత్తుగాను ఉండేది. దాని ఆకులు కూడా చాలా పెద్దవిగా, చాలా సుందరంగా ఉండేవి. అంతే కాక దాని పూలు, పళ్ళు కూడా చాలా అందంగాను, మధురంగాను ఉండేవి.

ఆ వృక్షరాజపు కొనకొమ్మకు చివరన- అన్నింటికంటే పెద్దఆకు ఒకటి ఉండేది. చల్లటి గాలులు మెల్లగా జోల పాటలు పాడుతుంటే అది హాయిహాయిగా కొమ్మ ఉయ్యాలలూగేది. 'ఇంతకు మించి ప్రపంచంలో మరే ఆనందమూ లేదు. ఇదే స్వర్గం' అనుకుంటుండేది. 'ఎప్పటికైనా తను నేల రాలాల్సిందే'అన్న నిజాన్ని మరిచిపోయి, ఆ తాత్కాలిక సుఖంలో ఓలలాడేది.అదే కొండ శిఖరంమీద మట్టిగడ్డ ఒకటి ఉండేది. ఎత్తైన ప్రదేశంలో ఉండీ ఉండీ , దానిలో 'తాను ఉన్నతమైనది' అన్న భావన స్థిరపడిపోయింది. హోరునవీచే గాలులు దానికి సుమధుర సంగీతంలా తోచేవి. 'తనను మించినది ప్రపంచంలో మరేదీ లేదు' అన్న ఆనందంతో అది ఎప్పుడూ పులకరించిపోతుండేది.

 

  ఒక రోజున గాలులు ఉధృతంగా వీచాయి. గాలి తాకిడికి మట్టిపెళ్ల విరిగింది. అంత ఎత్తు నుండి పర్వత పాదం వరకూ పడ్డది. ఉన్నతమైన తన స్థానం కోల్పోయినందుకు, పర్వతాగ్రం నుండి కిందికి దిగి రావల్సి వచ్చినందుకు అది విపరీతంగా బాధపడింది. గాలిని బాగా తిట్టుకున్నది. వీలైనన్ని శాపనార్థాలు పెట్టింది. 

 

ఇంతలో, చెట్టు కొనకొమ్మన ఆనందంలో ఊగిసలాడుతున్న ఆకు కూడా ఆ గాలికి కొమ్మనుండి వేరైంది. అది కూడా నేల రాలింది. తనకు చాలా అన్యాయం జరిగిందనిపించింది దానికి. కోపమూ, ఏడుపూ ఒకేసారి క్రమ్ముకురాగా అది ఎంతో విచారించింది. అలాగే గింగిరాలు తిరుక్కుంటూ కొట్టుకుపోతుంటే, వేరే ఎక్కడినుండో తిట్లు వినబడ్డాయి దానికి. అటు పోయి చూస్తే, అక్కడ ఉన్నది మట్టిగడ్డ! అలా అవి రెండూ ఒకదానికొకటి గత జీవిత వైభవాన్ని గురించీ, ప్రస్తుతకాలపు కష్టాలను గురించీ చెప్పుకున్నాయి. అట్లా తమ బాధల్ని పంచుకోవటం‌వల్ల, రెండింటి హృదయాలూ కొంత తేలిక పడ్డాయి. త్వరలోనే రెండూ మంచి మిత్రులయ్యాయి. రెండూ ఒక ఒప్పందాన్ని కూడా కుదుర్చుకున్నాయి: మట్టిపెళ్ల అన్నది,

"ఒకవేళ వర్షం వస్తే, నాపైన నువ్వు ఉండి, నేను కరిగిపోకుండా కాపాడు" అని. ఆకు అన్నది, "తీవ్రమైన గాలులు వచ్చినప్పుడు, నువ్వు నామీద ఉండి, నేను ఎటూ కొట్టుకుపోకుండా చూడు" అని. ఇద్దరికీ లాభమే! తమ భద్రతకు ఇక తిరుగులేదనుకున్నాయి రెండూనూ. ఆ ఆనందంలో ఉత్సాహంగా సంబరాలు చేసుకున్నాయి. 

 

కానీ ఏం చెప్పాలి, వాటి సంతోషం మూడు గంటల ముచ్చటే అయ్యింది. కొద్ది సేపటికే ప్రకృతి విలయ తాండవం మొదలెట్టింది. భయంకరమైన గాలివాన ప్రారంభమైంది. ఆ హడావిడిలో ఎవరు ఎవరిని రక్షించాలో మిత్రులిద్దరికీ అర్థం కాలేదు. ఆకు గాలికి కొట్టుకుపోయి, ఎక్కడో చిక్కుకుని చినిగిపోయింది. మట్టి పెళ్ల వానకు ముద్దై పుడమిలో కలిసిపోయింది.

మన స్థానాలను మనం ఎంత భద్రంగా పెట్టుకోవాలనుకున్నా, చివరికి అందరి స్థానాల్నీ నిర్ణయించేది ప్రకృతే!
