Modi & Trump – Two Leaders, One Path

Two Leaders, One Path: Modi & Trump – Two Leaders, One Path
One is the supreme leader of the world’s largest democracy. The other is the president of the most powerful nation on Earth. One is Narendra Modi, the other Donald Trump. Though separated by thousands of miles and raised in vastly different political landscapes, there are striking similarities between them — in their rise to power, leadership style, and political strategies.
Both Modi and Trump stormed into politics like a force of
nature, riding a wave of public discontent with the existing political system.
They skilfully positioned themselves as outsiders—champions of the
people—promising to disrupt the entrenched elite.
Trump declared war on the "corrupt establishment"
in Washington. Modi took aim at what he labeled the "Lutyens Media and
Intellectual Class" in Delhi. (This refers to the elite group residing in
New Delhi’s Lutyens Zone—a historically significant area designed by British
architect Edwin Lutyens, known for its broad avenues, government buildings, and
wealthy residents, often seen as disconnected from the common people.)
They both used language that resonated with the masses,
tapping into public emotion and distrust of traditional institutions.
Nationalism became a core weapon in both their
campaigns.
Trump reignited American patriotism with “Make America Great Again.”
Modi inspired with “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas” — promoting unity and
inclusive growth for a “New India.”
They portrayed themselves as defenders of national interest
and sovereignty. These nationalist slogans didn’t just win them votes — they
built a loyal following, with supporters who saw them as saviors rather
than mere politicians.
A shared tactic in their political playbook: attacking
mainstream media.
Trump dismissed opposing media as “fake news.”
Modi’s supporters coined terms like “presstitutes” (a derogatory word
suggesting paid media loyalty) and branded journalists who questioned the
government as “anti-nationals.”
By undermining the media and leveraging social media
to communicate directly with citizens, they built an unshakable echo chamber.
Public criticism couldn’t penetrate the fortresses they built around
themselves.
In their administrations, personality cults flourished. Every government scheme or national success was attributed to them personally. Their messaging conveyed: “I alone can fix it.”
Power became centralized. Ministers and officials faded into the background,
reinforcing the belief that the leader is everything.
Even in economic policy, similarities emerged.
Trump promised to protect domestic industries — imposing tariffs on Chinese
imports.
Modi emphasized “Make in India,” encouraging local manufacturing.
While economists raised concerns about these populist policies, their base
stood firmly behind them.
Together, Modi and Trump represent a new political trend
in modern democracy.
Operating within democratic systems yet often weakening their spirit,
they crafted a unique form of leadership — one that plays on public hopes and
fears to gain power and hold it.
So while they come from different countries, Modi and Trump
seem to walk a very similar political path — one that continues to
reshape modern governance.
